ABOUT İZMİR


İzmir, located in the western part of Turkey, has been charming as the Pearl of the Aegean for centuries. It was referred to as "Princess" by Victor Hugo. Izmir's historical background traced to 6500 BC. İzmir has become the center of many civilizations like Hittite, Phrygia, Lydia, Persia, Rome, Mongol and Ottoman.

This port city, which specializes in maritime trade, has been an ideal commercial resource for the region over the years. Today, İzmir is the third largest city in the Republic of Turkey, founded by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. The city has increasing its importance not only in the Eastern Mediterranean but also in Turkey.

İzmir is a very special city in the unique geography of Turkey. It is a bridge between Asia and Europe, as well as the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. İzmir, which is the city of fairs and congresses for 84 years, also hosts İzmir International Fair.

TRANSPORTATION


Buses can be used directly or indirectly to any part of the city.

You can reach the districts by metro and IZBAN's two main transfer hubs in the city center.

You can reach by ferry services between Üçkuyular and Alsancak, the two coasts of the Gulf.

However, in order to benefit from such ferry services, you can travel by purchasing 2- 3-5 and 10-use daily tickets from some kiosk and some station ticket-windows of metro.

For transportation, you can also use HAVAŞ, city buses, light rail system (İZBAN) or taxi from Adnan Menderes Airport, which is 15 km away from the city center.

TRAVEL


İzmir, the third largest city of Turkey, is a center of culture, arts, tourism and trade. The Aegean Sea stretches along the western coast of the province with its bays and beaches.

İzmir can be seen from the bird's eye view from the Tarihî Asansör (Elevator) building which was built in 1907 in order to provide easy transportation due to the difference between Mithatpaşa Street and Halilrıfatpaşa Street and is now used as a restaurant, bar, cafe.

Çiğli Bird Paradise where is wetland inhabited by endangered species of birds in the world and, right next to it, İzmir Natural Life Park where hosts the lovely animal species can offer you a quiet natural habitat.

In the City Center; you can visit the İzmir Clock Tower which has become the symbol of İzmir in Konak Square and the historical Kemeraltı Bazaar where you can find traditional Turkish handicrafts, spices, leather products, clothes, jewelry, carpets and rugs for every taste and budget.

Local restaurants offers affordable and delicious meals at Kemeraltı, and Turkish coffee and hot and cold beverages are served at the tea shops in and around Kızlarağası Inn

You can eat at cafes or restaurants located along the coastline.

Archeology and Ethnography Museum in Konak,

Historical and Art Museum, where you can see the unique findings of the past in Kültürpark,

The Smyrna Antique City, which was founded in the second half of the year 3000 BC in the district of Bayraklı of İzmir,

St. Polycarp Church which is the oldest church with frescoes worth seeing in the vicinity of Alsancak, and other churches,

The Book and Paper Art Museum, Ethnography Museum and Museum of Naval History in Bornova, The Museum of Natural and Historical History and Botanical Garden at Ege University and Yeşilova Höyük (mound) which is one of the oldest settlements in the same district.

Alaçatı / Çeşme

Çesme, located 70 km away from İzmir, is one of the most visited places with its beaches and entertainment venues in summer. Foça

The historical port and tourist town, Foça, which is 65 km away from İzmir, hosts the "cliffs struck by the ships that lose its route" written in Homer Epic. A pleasant day can be spent at the beach and restaurants.

Selçuk and Şirince

In the district of Selçuk where is 70 km away from İzmir, you can visit the Ephesus Antique City which is in the list of UNESCO Cultural Heritage, the Virgin Mary Church and its historical area. With its preserved historic architecture, Şirince village where is 8 km away from the district of Selçuk can also be visited.

Bergama

Bergama, where is 80 kilometers away from Izmir, deserves more than one day in your visit with its entirely ancient city characteristics.
